The Capitanio is the first Italian boat to be entered for the register of historical boats, even before the much more famous Amerigo Vespucci. Its centenary history is exciting: it was built in 1926 in Genoa, equipped with a steam engine, and it was transported up to Iseo Lake with all the difficulties of that period, to be used for the transport of people.

After the second world war, during which it was damaged by shots of machineguns and a fire, the transport of people on the lake lost of value, when private cars became popular so the motorship was bought by a great company in Lovere which used it for goods transportation, modifying it according to the new use. When this function also became obsolete the ship risked to be demolished but thanks probably to its name, dedicated to one of Lovere's patron saints, and to the affection of many private people loving navigation, it survived until our times, passing thorough one owner to another, each of them restoring and embellishing it, but always maintaining its original features. Many liberty details make it actually special, as the seats in handmade iron and the control systems which are still original and working.

The Capitanio is normally based in Lovere, a few kilometres from Iseo and Sulzano, but it's possible to find it in some occasions also in others villages of the lake.
